As your business evolves, having access to the right payment gateways in the right locations is key. Chargify is now integrated with Adyen for credit card processing in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. Many customers choose Adyen because of their large European coverage and presence. They also offer a risk management system and act as an acquirer as well. 

Part of the Chargify to Adyen integration is the out of the box support of 3D Secure 2, which ensures compliance with the latest authentication regulations in Europe. Our support of 3D Secure allows you to reduce your fraud risk and enables a customer-friendly authentication for public signup pages, self service pages,  and your Chargify-hosted page.

Control Your Variables with Prepaid Usage

You can now automate your prepaid usage billing scenarios with Chargify!

Prepaid usage allows you to maintain a recurring, predictable revenue stream while still allowing your customers to be charged based on consumption. This is achieved through an upfront fee that is based on a quantity (or prepayment) sometimes thought of as a commitment. Your customer then draws down against their commitment. Once their entire commitment amount is used up they are charged overage fees at a ‘burst over’ rate..Overage charges are then calculated and included in your customers regular billing cycle and invoice, this allows you and your customer to maintain a single source of truth on what they are consuming and being billed for.

With prepaid usage, your customers' prepaid amounts can 're-up' every month (I commit to 50 server hours each month) or can extend out for longer periods of time (I commit to 550 server hours for the year).

Companies often move to prepaid usage models because they can incentivize their customers to increase upfront commitments or prepaid quantities, by offering a reduced price point for prepaid units or an increased rate for overage units. It is also possible to allow your customers prepaid quantities to expire or roll over to a following period.

Our Chargify prepaid usage functionality also supports your revenue and accounting compliance needs. As your customer consumes their prepaid amounts, Chargify tracks their consumption for appropriate revenue reporting and recognition. This is all handled with a single component in the Chargify system, reducing the complexity of setup and maintenance for your team.

API: Better Insights and Integrations via MRR Data

MRR data is now available via the Chargify API. This rich MRR data, driven by subscription creation, changes, or cancellations, is already surfaced in Chargify’s out-of-the-box MRR report. With the MRR API endpoints, you can now pull this data directly out of Chargify for inclusion in external reporting tools or integrations into other back office systems.

Payments via Apple Pay Now Available

Chargify is making it easier than ever for your customers to pay you, with Apple Pay. The simplicity of this new payment method will allow customers to complete their purchase without entering a single piece of information. This is incredibly important for the card holder and also for you as it reduces the friction at the checkout for new and existing customers.  

In addition to added simplicity, Apple Pay reduces chargebacks due to fraud and costly fees. Apple Pay uses a tokenized ID specific to your customer’s supported device to authorize secure transactions for your products.

API: Know When You Customers are Churning

It is now easier to know when your customers are about to churn with the introduction of the Pending Cancellation Webhook within our API. This additional webhook will trigger when a customers’ subscription is updated to cancel in the future (ie. at the end of the period). This update will allow you a better understanding of your upcoming customer cancellations. With this you are now able to:

  • Drive customer retention campaigns via your Customer Success tea, Support team or marketing software
  • Better integrate into external provisioning systems

Introducing Multi-Attribute Rating

It is now possible to bill for consumption of your service at different rates based on the attributes in your events data. Multi-Attribute Rating allows you to dynamically create segments from your events and define targeted pricing for each segment, leading to increased price flexibility and invoice clarity while preventing catalog bloat.

Consumption-based services face unique pricing challenges around rating access to their service. Both the cost to the provider and the value to the consumer vary depending on many factors. Powerful compute servers cost more than standard ones. Text messages and phone calls to France cost more than ones to the United States. Historically, providers have needed to track these factors on their side and map them to a bloated pricing catalog on the billing system side. But now, with Chargify's Multi-Attribute Rating, providers simply tag their event data with these factors and define multiple rates — as many as needed — for their combinations of attributes. Chargify does the rest - we select the appropriate rate for every event and produce an invoice that is concise, accurate, and easy to read.

Imagine a ‘Cloud Server’ company that offers multiple sizes of servers to their customers. Each server is billed based on the hourly consumption, with higher rates for the larger servers. Previously, to charge for each size server at its own rate, Cloud Serve would need to create multiple components (one for each size) and report usage separately for each size. With Multi-Attribute Rating, Cloud Serve creates a single Events-Based Component, based on the ‘Server Hours’ data stream and metric, and varies the price based on the ‘Server Size’ attribute. Taking it a step further, Cloud Serve can even vary the price based on another attribute, such as location, time of day used, day of week used, etc. For example, a server in the EU may cost more than a server of the same size in the US. This is configured by simply adding a new rate for the attribute combination and not by creating a component for every size and location pair.

With Multi-Attribute Rating, your flexibility of rating based on the true value your product  provides is even easier. You can now provide very specific pricing, varying on attributes, while maintaining a consistent and easy-to-manage product catalog.

With this very powerful pricing model, it is equally as important to ensure your customers understand their invoices. When Multi-Attribute Based charges are included on an invoice, the invoice template has been updated to clearly outline how your customers are being charged and the value you are providing. A new “Usage Details” section will appear at the bottom of the invoice, clearly detailing both the amount consumed and the unique price for each applied rate. Your customers will clearly see what they were charged and why, even in complex billing scenarios.

Preview your Customers' Charges Prior to Billing

It is now possible to preview a customer's charges before invoices are generated, giving you better insight into what your customers invoices will look like. This is especially useful when working with a high profile or important customer, or if you want to track a customer who is in a high growth phase with your product.

Once called, the Chargify API will return the customers current charges, based on the components they are subscribed to and the current usage and events data that has been submitted for the billing period.

With this functionality, it is also possible to submit your own quantities for a specific customer, to preview what their calculated charges would look like. This does not update their quantities but instead provides a view of what charges look like if they consume or sign up for those specific amounts. An example of where this preview functionality can be leveraged is within your self-service portals and shopping carts. With this API, it is now possible to easily display what an invoice may look like for specific consumption levels and subscriptions during your customers sign-up or account maintenance activities.

The use of this preview API does not impact your customers charges and is for investigative purposes only.

Unlock Value Based Pricing with Events-Based Billing

Chargify is excited to introduce Events-Based Billing to you! We’re empowering companies everywhere to bill like the biggest software companies in the world. Events-Based billing unlocks value-based pricing by linking the value your product provides to the invoice you send out.

Events-Based Billing lets you step beyond standard usage based billing by leveraging the massive amounts of events data you already collect. Feed this multifaceted data directly into Chargify, in real time, and bill on any aspect of those events.

Computations based on your data, called ‘Metrics’ allow you to track real time trends and their revenue impacts based on every aspect of your fully attributed data. From here, you can decide how to best link your value to your pricing by choosing which metric to bill on, leveraging the new Events-Based component type. As your fully attributed events data is already being fed into Chargify, billing changes become a simple update within Chargify, rather than a developer-draining integration project.

Data ingested via our new APIs becomes instantly queryable and trackable within the Chargify events data store, powered by Keen.. As a Chargify merchant, it is also possible to sign up for a direct relationship with Keen to support your overall events data management. With the Keen platform you can do even more: stream, store, query, visualize and integrate all of your events data.

Enable Multiple Payment Gateways on a Single Site

It is now possible to assign more than one gateway to a site within Chargify!

Picking a gateway and supported payment methods are two important choices you make for your SaaS business. At Chargify, we currently support over 20 gateways that span across every geography, with varying features and payment methods.

The introduction of our multi-gateway functionality allows you to now choose any mix of gateways with any available payment method within a single Chargify site. This enhancement eliminates the previous requirement of one gateway per site, greatly reducing your site maintenance overhead and giving you more time to focus on growing your business. An example of leveraging multi-gateway is to connect Stripe and Braintree to facilitate credit card and PayPal transitions in a single site.

If you currently have a site that you would like to add additional gateways to, please contact Chargify support to have multi-gateway and your selected gateway(s) turned on for your account.

Store Information Important to Your Business Directly on the Chargify Customer Record

It is now possible to store even more relevant business information at the Customer level directly within Chargify by leveraging our new custom field functionality. 

The same custom field logic that was previously only available at the Subscription record level is now also available at the Customer level. As is true for other custom field locations, there is no limit to the number of custom fields you can create; custom field naming is customizable by you; and custom fields can be represented as text, drop downs or radio buttons. 

The addition of custom fields at the Customer level, lets you store even more of the important information you use to run your business. Keeping this information directly within Chargify cuts down on your teams need to store it somewhere else and ensures your team has all the information they need, right at their fingertips.
